Well folks, it finally happened, and just when I was least expecting it. The Giant Sewer Rat dropped while I was fishing for the Dalaran daily, Jewel of the Sewers. I never attempted to fish specifically for this pet, although I hear the drop rate is pretty high. Instead, I just did my Dalaran dailies whenever they occurred, hoping that eventually it would drop. And it did.
Of course, fishing this rare pet awards you the I Smell A Giant Rat achievement.
Though in real life I don't like rats, this one has a very cartoony feel about it and it looks pretty funny. It reminds me of Ratatouille.

I've always wondered if it was possible to drop while fishing for the daily. I can't speak for how the mechanics work, I just assumed that while fishing for one the other wouldn't happen.
I hate trying to find time to fish, so my general rule is that I hit path of frost and fish for its entirety. This gives me 10 minutes in which I can get meat for food, sell suckerfish or possibly get a turtle mount/giant rat/whatever.
The Giant Sewer Rat has eluded me so far but an alt got it on his third cast. Damned alt luck.
@Vikt of course it drops during the daily. It doesn't matter why you fish, as long as you fish :) Well, in Dalaran that is...
@Gyldenfeax I'm sure that if I had fished for it explicitly, it wouldn't have dropped so easily. I also had an easy drop with the Sea Turtle.
