Mining, herbalism and skinning dailies

Here's an idea I just got after learning that mining and herbalism would give XP in Cataclysm: why not implement mining, herbalism and skinning daily quests? Some tradeskills have dailies so why wouldn't gathering skills?

A big advantage of gathering dailies would be that they could take effect from level 1. I'm guessing the main reason why professions don't generally have dailies from low levels is that they are much harder (and more inconsistent) to level. Not so with gathering professions. If you pick up one or two of them from the beginning you can easily level them while you are leveling your character.

As an example of how this might work, consider the following. The quest giver asks the player for, say, 10 copper bars. In exchange, the player gets 1-2 gold, some nice XP and perhaps a bag with some random stuff in it, with the possibility of containing green or blue items. Something like the random dungeon bag of goodies.

I believe that mining/herbalism/skinning dailies would be advantageous for any player:
  • players would be encouraged to pick gathering skills from the get-go.

  • people would also be encouraged to level their gathering skills more and keep them up to date. I still see level 80s with Mining 100 or some such.

  • related to the above it might encourage people to explore more in order to find nodes.

  • it would give people extra XP and gold and even some nice items to help them level up.
I would make these dailies scale with skill level, meaning that at the beginning you'd be required to supply copper bars, later tin bars, later iron bars and so on. I would also add quest givers in each major city and perhaps even in the bigger quest hubs.

Here's to hoping that Blizzard will implement something like this, although I'm not holding my breath.

You'll already be getting XP from herbing/mining, so there's no need to an XP incentive for doing gathering dailies. Paying gold for trade goods as a quest reward works for one-off quests, but as part of a daily I think it would have serious impacts on the WoW economy. If copper bars are currently worth more than the daily reward, very few people would bother to do the quest, as it would be better to just sell off the bars on the AH. A better quest idea would be to seek out a rare, quest-only item (say "Gem-studded ore" or "Silverthorn seeds") like the fishing dailies do - that way the quest turn in doesn't take something that is valuable to the players, but they will have farmed up some mats while they are searching for the item.

Well, that's why I was thinking that the reward from such a quest should be slightly more valuable than just selling the mats on the AH. If you add up the gold reward + item + XP, it might be worth it.

Or, another idea would be like you said, there could simply be a special type of mat which drops from nodes and is strictly for the daily quest.

Hey Darth,
They did play around with that idea in Burning Crusade, with the Shattered Sun Daily that became unlocked when you hit 70.

Gives 250 SSO rep and 12650 XP.

As an Altoholic, I support the idea of having low level daily quests. Any quest that I can easily complete each day makes it more likely that I will do so, and keep mats on hand to be able to do it.

I don't think it would cause any more inflation of low level mats, instead, it would cause more people to farm them, lowering the price across the board, especially if it asked for different mats as you got to higher levels.

Yeah now I remember that daily.
Well, I'm not counting on them to implement anything like what I proposed. It was just an idea. At any rate, Cataclysm brings too many goodies to care about this!
