Thanks to the wonderful patch known as 3.1, I am now sitting on the largest sum of gold ever. And mind you, at 32K it's far from being impressive, what with some players having accumulated hundreds of thousands of gold. I feel, though, comfortably wealthy at this point. The only remaining question is: how do I spend it?
The obvious answer would be: flying mounts for all my characters and alts. Well, I have already spent the required 6000+1000 for my Hunter main, along with the same amount for my Death Knight, the two classes I love most. Then I also have 3 other characters who are around level 71. Of those, I will probably level my Paladin and Warlock to 80 because they have a few professions that I want to keep on top of. I will probably neglect the Rogue because it does not interest me anymore for the time being. I won't be getting flying mounts for the Pally and Lock for now. The reason is simple: I'm waiting for an announcement regarding the next expansion to see if they ban flying again until level 87 for another stupid reason such as "Water Flying".
Apart from the flying mounts, I have my own guild and have purchased all 6 bank tabs a while back. That's a total of almost 9000G.
My Death Knight is pretty well geared, with some of the best BOE stuff I could find or craft. I'm not gonna spend another cent on him. However, I am gonna gear my Hunter some more because he's a bit scruffy right now. He even sports a few greens! Gasp!
So, the first major purchase I'm making just as I'm typing this - and don't try to dissuade me :) - is a Band of the Kirin Tor which I'm gonna immediately upgrade to an Inscribed Band of the Kirin Tor. I've thought long and hard about this. Is it really worth it? Well, for me it is. The stats on the upgraded ring (which is a ilvl 213 item, mind you) are some of the best you can buy as a solo player. These 2 cost me 8775 and I am only Honored with the Kirin Tor. Besides, I got the Ring of the Kirin Tor achievement. Some cheap-ass achievement this turned out to be!
Apart from the good stats on the ring, I highly value the Dalaran teleport. Since patch 3.1, the cooldown on this ring has also been lowered from 1 hour to 30 minutes! This makes it awesome for me because lately I've been doing a lot of jumping to different zones. From Dalaran to the Argent Tournament, to wherever the random Tournament daily takes me, to wherever the Dalaran fishing daily takes me and finally to Shattrath for the daily cooking and fishing quests.
Furthermore, it will probably be at least another year before the next expansion which means I will have a lot of time to really enjoy the utility brought by this ring. Further, even in the next expansion the Dalaran teleport will be useful if you consider that from Dalaran you have access to Northrend, Outland and the old continents.
Now there still remains a hefty sum of gold, not even counting the >10K gold in mats that I have stashed in my bank. I was thinking to blow a large portion of this gold on a crazy item or two.
The two foremost items that I have in mind are a Mekgineer's Chopper and a Traveler's Tundra Mammoth. As you probably know, both of these are big vanity mounts and I'm talking BIG vanity. At roughly 20K gold, they are more or less a gold sink but are sure to attract the envy of other players. Now let's analyze these 2, shall we?
The Mekgineer's Chopper looks pretty rad, IMO. It would fit my scruffy dwarf like a glove. It doesn't have any utility compared to a "normal" mount and it is probably the more expensive of the two.
The Traveler's Tundra Mammoth on the other hand is a lot more useful with it's repair and reagents vendor, though the reagents will be useless for a hunter after ammo will be removed from the game. However, it doesn't look as rad.
Decisions, decisions. I'm not even sure I should spend money on these mounts since I'm not a mount collector, nor I will ever be. But hey, what's the point of making gold if you can't spend it? So what would YOU do?

I read your blog daily and appreciate the tips and suggestions for making gold. So far I've made about 2K in the last couple of weeks. A lot of my 3.1 speculation either didn't or hasn't happened yet since it's taking a little longer for players to get geared in Ulduar.
My suggestion to you - spend that gold! I personally love all of the vanity items that are available and for those that have the resources, why not flaunt it a little bit?
Let's see some screenshots after you decide what to buy!
Thanks a lot TB! I'm glad my tips can be of some help to someone. Unfortunately I'm in the same boat as you - speculating certain mats failed big time in 3.1 and now I'm sitting on all those mats, just hoping that the prices will go up. Right now they're at an all time low.
As for the vanity items... I'm too busy doing the dailies right now to care too much, so it'll take a while for me to sit down and think hard about this.
I've been reading your blog for roughly a month, maybe 3 weeks, its a welcome break whilst at work! I've been in my guild for a while, a great bunch of friends, but i do prefer the solo aspect of the game, and as such have been trying to solo things a lot as of late.
I have 900g right now, and aim to get the 5k gold for my flying mount. But to answer your question on what should you spend your cash on, i'd go for both mounts tbh! Its all but a distant wet dream for me to have 32k gold. I'm highly envious!
I'm flattered Joe! Thanks for the kind words. You didn't mention your level. At 80 it's fairly easy to make lots of gold just by finishing all the quests in the remaining zones, especially the high level ones like Zul'Drak, Icecrown and Storm Peaks. Those alone should bring you 3000 gold or more. It would also help if you had 1 or 2 gathering professions. I think you just gave me an idea to write an article about ways in which to reach the elusive 5000 gold (actually 6000, no wait, 7000 with Cold Weather Flying :)
Hey! I'm lvl 71-72 atmo, and pottering about the lower zones and dragonblight in northend. I was just running a few quests yesterday, and it hit me that in 1 hr doing quests there i had made 200g from handins alone! I'm a herbalist and alchemist atmo, with herbs at 435 and alchemy a wee bit lower. Originally it was for raid buffs for my guild, but i've been overtaken on that front already so may drop it for mining.
A guide would be seriously welcome for a solo'er!!!!
Until you hit 80 you shouldn't even worry too much about making gold. It comes naturally from quests. If you also have 1 or 2 gathering professions, you're set. At 77 you should be able to afford that epic flying mount. I will write a more in-depth post about how to afford the mount shortly.
IMO, I'd buy that mammoth. You're a friend in every city for those looking to use your vendors. If you do raid, people can run outside the instance (like after a wipe) and repair quickly w/o hearthing out.
I bought the chopper in the end, as you've probably read. As for the mammoth, I'll probably get that one too at some point, if I have too much gold but it will be of limited usefulness to me due to the fact that I don't raid, hunters how have the full use of their bag slots, as a rule I don't like to carry lots of stuff while leveling/questing and 20-22 slot bags aren't that expensive. So I'll have to think hard if that mammoth is really worth it.
I only wish we could ride our mounts in instances because when I'm farming Strat, my bags are filled in a few minutes.
