This pet is obtained as a reward from the quest An OOX of Your Own. It's not so simple though. In order to complete the aforementioned quest, you must complete 3 other quests: Find OOX-17/TN, Find OOX-09/HL and Find OOX-22/FE in Tanaris, Hinterlands and Feralas respectively. You must kill random mobs in these 3 areas until a quest item drops, which asks you to find a robot chicken in the area. Once you find the chicken, you must escort it across the map. While escorting it you will be attacked about 3 times by groups of about 3 mobs.
Now the problem here is that while you're leveling through one of these areas and you come across the quest, the attacking mobs might be a bit too much for little old you so you might have a hard time completing this quest. With a high level character though it's cake.
Since I couldn't remember if I had done even one of these quests with my Hunter, I decided to simply buy the Mechanical Chicken from the Auction House. I have enough gold to afford this. Still, I watched the prices for a long time before I finally bought it for a low 750G.
Now that I think about it, it might be worth at some point, after I clear some of my WoW schedule, to complete this quest with my alts that I'm almost positive they haven't encountered it. On the other hand, it's been so long ago since I passed through these areas that I'm afraid of wasting hours upon hours trying to get a drop that will never appear.

If you ticket a GM or post on the customer service forums, they're usually more than happy to tell you which portions of the quest (if any) you've completed. It's a pretty common query I gather. :)
This is a PIA if you can't remember if you've done the quest or not. Killed mobs for an hour for two of them as I'm not sure if they're done or not! Buying it saves lots of irritation.
Wish they had 'these are quests you've completed' log.
You just made me want to get the quests done both on my main and fresh lv80 alt - one to keep and another to sell. The thing that bugs me is that I can't for the life of me remember whether or not I finished the Tanaris and Hinterlands ones. >.< I remember attempting the Hinterlands one, but did I finish it? Who knows.
Ya, I'm too stubborn to buy one from the AH. Just like I farmed all the Whelplings a while back, I'm going to get this one myself.
I'll probably do this quest at some point on my alts, just to sell the pet but I'm wondering if it is worth the time spent.
